How It Works
Our methodology
The Problem
In Battleship, after each shot you need to decide where to fire next. Random guessing wastes shots. Our calculator shows you the mathematically optimal cells to target based on where ships can still be hiding.
Probability Calculation
For every unknown cell, we calculate the probability that at least one enemy ship occupies it. This considers all remaining ships, their possible positions, and the constraints from your hits and misses.
The probabilities are combined using proper Bayesian mathematics — not simple counting. This gives more accurate estimates, especially in complex board states.
Machine Learning Optimized
The algorithm's targeting parameters were refined through evolutionary reinforcement learning across millions of simulated games. This discovered optimal strategies that outperform hand-tuned heuristics.
Smart Targeting
When you score a hit, the calculator adapts instantly. It identifies which ships could be at that location and focuses probability on the cells most likely to contain the rest of that ship.
- Tracks multiple potential ship locations simultaneously
- Recognizes hit patterns and extends them intelligently
- Adjusts when ships are sunk to refocus on remaining targets
What We Don't Do
We don't try to predict human psychology or guess where your opponent "probably" placed their ships. The calculator assumes ships could be anywhere valid, then uses pure probability to guide your shots.
The best cell to shoot is simply the one most likely to contain a ship — no tricks, no guessing, just math.
